Things to Do in The Apartment Before Moving Out

Once you took the decision to move out from a rented apartment, there are several things to do in case you want to see your security deposit in your mail as soon as possible. Make sure you leave the apartment in the condition and cleanliness you found it when first moving in. If you are having troubles remembering what exactly you should do, take a look at your lease, everything has to be specified there. Your obligations will be listed there, so you'll know what you are expected to do in order to get your deposit back.

There are many things to plan and do before your moving day arrives.

Plan your moving out:

  1. Set up a budget for your moving so you know if you can afford buying packing materials, or paying someone to do the packing, or simply to hire a removals company to transport your belongings to your new home.
  2. Months before you move you will have to decide who will be helping you? Will you ask friends or family? Will you do all of the work on your own and travel with your own car? Will you have to arrange for a professional moving service?
  3. Research moving companies.
  4. Start collecting packing materials and boxes for your moving. Local grocery and liquor stores can be your source of free sturdy moving boxes.
  5. A month or two before your moving day start decluttering your home. Throw away things you haven't used in a year. Things you store because once you thought you would have some use for them. Anything you're not planning on using has to go to the trash. It can be hard to get rid of some items because they have sentimental value, but there are ways to make the parting easier.
  6. Donate or give away clothes, toys, electronics (not broken ones). Do whatever you can to decrease the number of stuff you will be moving.
  7. Talk to your current landlord about the date of your moving out and ask your estate agent when will you be able to move into your new house. You can make your last day at your old flat, your first day at your new place so you don't have to use a storage and wonder where to live for a couple of days.
  8. A week or two before the move stop buying groceries and eat what you have left in the fridge and the pantry.
  9. Start making a list of organisations and people you have to inform about your change of address. Cancel magazine subscriptions, your broadband connection and TV provider, etc. Also, inform your HR department at work that you are changing your address.
  10. Inform the local councils that you are moving. You will need to inform the council that you are living in about a month prior to your moving. And if possible you should inform the council you are moving to, a couple of weeks before you move in your new place. This way you will avoid an overlap and having to pay two council taxes.
  11. Check the apartment two times for things you may forget there. Don’t leave belongings which you don’t want to take with you, you should recycle or toss them.
  12. Most landlords rather leave the move out cleaning to the tenants, so check your lease and if it's your job you can look for a cleaning service because it is a lot of work to add to your moving process. If you don't have the budget for a move out cleaning service, you will have to do the job on your own. So you should plan one or maybe two days for cleaning the flat.

Do a proper end of tenancy cleaning:

tenancy cleaning Here’s what tips the post tenancy experts from Strong Move had to share:
  1. Remove stains and spots from everywhere. These on the walls can be easily painted and for these on the carpets, you can use some good cleaning methods and products from the local market or use home-made solutions for tough stains;
  2. Clean out the refrigerator and the oven. Try to organize these tasks at least two weeks before moving out, because later they can consume you extra time.
  3. Wipe kitchen cabinets inside and outside. This is a must as well. You may have noticed how clean the inside of the cupboards and the pantry were, you ought to leave them in the same condition.
  4. Wash windows and window sills and frames. It may be one of the most annoying cleaning chores, but it has to be done when you are moving out of a rented property.
  5. Take out the rubbish and ventilate the flat. When you are done packing and your boxes are out of the house. When you are done with your move out cleaning, empty trash cans and dispose of the rubbish. Also, leave the windows open for a couple of hours to ventilate the flat before you bring in your landlord for inspection.
  6. Scrub the bathroom and toilet. Do not skip this part. Even if it's the room you least like to clean, you cannot leave a rented flat without cleaning the bathroom and scrubbing the toilet.
  7. Dust and vacuum. Vacuum all rooms and hallways, carefully dust and wipe down furniture, counters, etc. Clean under and behind furniture and appliances, wash mirrors, every nook and cranny must be cleaned.

Gather all the keys you have for this apartment and return them back to the landlord. Your landlord will want to inspect the flat and see if you have held your side of the tenancy agreement. If he's pleased, he is obligated to give you your deposit back in 10 days after you've moved out.
